What happened to NoWait, and what restaurants use instead

The NoWait app that let diners get in line from their phone became part of Yelp in 2017. Its waitlist now lives inside Yelp Guest Manager. If you ran NoWait at the host stand, or loved it as a diner, here is where that job went and what else does it today.

Why people look for a NoWait alternative

NoWait was a restaurant waitlist app: diners joined the line from their phone and got a text when their table was ready, and hosts ran the list on a tablet. Yelp announced it had acquired NoWait on March 1, 2017, and built the waitlist into the Yelp app. Today that product is sold to restaurants as Yelp Guest Manager. Restaurants that want the NoWait experience without a Yelp subscription use a standalone waitlist app instead.

NoWait no longer exists on its own

After the acquisition, the NoWait waitlist became part of Yelp. There is no separate NoWait subscription to sign up for; the direct successor is Yelp Guest Manager.

The successor is a bigger bill

Yelp lists Guest Manager at a total monthly cost of $129 to $349, after an introductory period at $0. NoWait's appeal was a simple list and a text; many small restaurants want that without paying for a full guest platform.

Your waitlist lives inside Yelp

With Guest Manager, guests join through Yelp and its partner channels, and the relationship runs through Yelp's platform. A standalone app lets guests join from your own QR code, link, or kiosk.

Not every business is a restaurant

NoWait and Guest Manager are built for food service. Barbershops, salons, clinics, and pop-ups that liked the NoWait idea need a waitlist that is not restaurant-only.

What to compare before you switch

Feature lists across this category look nearly identical. These are the five questions where the answers actually diverge.

How long until the first customer is in line

Some queue tools can be evaluated in an afternoon. Others need a sales call and an onboarding project. Ask whether you can create a queue, print a QR code, and take a real walk-in on the same day you sign up.

Whether text messages cost extra

SMS is the feature customers actually notice, and it is where pricing gets slippery. Some tools bundle a monthly allowance, some bill per message on top of the subscription, and some put it behind the top tier. Compare the number of texts included, not the headline price.

Per-seat pricing versus flat rate

Queue software gets used by whoever is at the front desk, which changes shift to shift. Per-seat pricing punishes that: you either pay for staff who log in twice a month, or everyone shares one login. Flat-rate plans price the business instead of the headcount.

What the free plan actually does

A free plan that cannot take a real customer is a trial with extra steps. Check whether it covers a full location, whether notifications work at all, and whether your data is still there when you upgrade.

Where your history lives

Wait times, no-show rates, and peak hours are the reason to run a digital queue in the first place. Confirm you can see more than the current day, and that you can export it if you ever leave.

The alternatives

MakeTheQueue

Restaurants and walk-in businesses that want the NoWait experience: guests join by QR code, watch their place in line on their phone, and get a text when it is their turn, with a free plan to start.

Free plan
Yes, and it stays free: one location, QR join, email alerts, kiosk, and a lobby TV display.
Texts
Two-way texting on paid plans. Guests reply 1 to confirm, 2 for more time, or 9 to cancel.
Pricing model
Flat monthly price per business, no per-cover or per-seat fees. Current prices on the pricing page.

Full-service restaurants that want the waitlist, reservations, and a floor plan in one tool.

Free plan
Yes, with a small monthly text allowance and a cap on parties.
Texts
Texts on every plan; two-way chat from the Starter tier.

Free plan
Yes, for one user with basic features.
Texts
One-way SMS alerts. No guest replies.
Pricing model

Which one to pick, by situation

Most of your guests find you on Yelp
Yelp Guest Manager. It is what NoWait became, and the Yelp button is real foot traffic.
You want NoWait's simple list and table-ready text, without a Yelp bill
MakeTheQueue. Guests scan a QR code at the host stand, watch their place in line, and get a text they can reply to.
You also need reservations and a floor plan
TablesReady, on the tier that includes table management.
You are not a restaurant
MakeTheQueue or Waitwhile. Both run walk-in lines for barbershops, salons, clinics, and events.

Switching from NoWait

If you are leaving Guest Manager or an old paper list, set up the replacement first: create the queue, turn on party size, write the table-ready text, and put the QR code at the host stand. Run it alongside your current list for a weekend, then switch. Guests do not need an app; they scan the code with their camera.
