Formula: customers ahead multiplied by minutes per customer, divided by how many are serving at once, rounded to the minute. A queue with nobody serving is treated as one server so the estimate is never infinite.

How the calculator works

The estimate is the total minutes of service ahead of the customer, divided by the number of people serving in parallel. Six customers ahead at fifteen minutes each is ninety minutes of work. One barber clears it in ninety minutes; three barbers clear it in thirty. The division is the part most hand-quoted waits forget, and an over-quoted wait is the number that makes a customer walk out.

Little's law in plain English

Queueing theory has one rule every front desk already knows by feel: the number of people waiting equals how fast they arrive multiplied by how long each one stays. If six people an hour join your line and each spends thirty minutes in it, you will have three people waiting on average. That is Little's law. It means you can shrink the line in exactly two ways: slow the arrivals (spread them out with bookings) or shorten the stay (serve faster or serve more people at once). The calculator above is the second lever, one customer at a time.

Why quoted waits are usually wrong

  • They forget the divisor. A four-chair shop that quotes as if one chair is cutting over-quotes by roughly four times.
  • They use a remembered average. Staff remember the quick visits. Measured service times are almost always longer than the number in someone's head.
  • They ignore what people ahead came for. Three fades ahead is not the same wait as three buzz cuts. Per-service estimates fix this.
  • They round down to keep the customer. A quote of twenty that turns into thirty-five loses the customer at minute twenty-five, angrier than an honest thirty-five would have.

What to do with the number

Because a three-chair barbershop serves three customers at once. Six people ahead at fifteen minutes each is ninety minutes of work, but with three chairs cutting in parallel the sixth person is called in about thirty. Quoting ninety would send them across the street. This is the single most common mistake in a hand-quoted wait.

Your real average, measured, not remembered. Time ten visits from the moment the customer is called to the moment they leave and average them. If customers pick services with very different lengths, average the services of the people actually ahead in line, which is what per-service estimates do automatically.

Small numbers are noisy. With one or two people ahead, one unusually long or short visit swings the average, and the customer at the front is told they are next rather than given a number. Estimates settle down once a queue has a few dozen completed visits behind it.
